The Mermaid's Homesickness by WonderlandNinja The Mermaid's Homesickness by WonderlandNinja
Another dark twist on a fairy tale.
In the original story, Ariel's prince is betrothed already, and she's offered a chance to return home by killing him, but instead suicides. This focuses on her grief and shows her sewing her legs together to try to return.
Once again, HUGE RUSH JOB. Done in one day.
Oil on canvas 16"x20"

Hello,

I seen this and didn't realize it was an actual painting. This touch me in a different way. I used to weigh 550 lbs and lost 330. I've had some plastic surgery and in October I'm getting ready to get my legs done. I reposted this on IG because sometimes I feel like you wish for one life and when you get it you lose a part of your old life and wish you could change it back. Thank you for this beautiful painting. I would be honored to have it tatted on me

OMGoddesses, I'm glad I'm not your parents ... It would mean I would have to send you money on a regular basis!  (As I did my own college-aged kids!)  P.S.  Good for you for making it to college.  What are you studying???

Why would you rush this? You should have taken the appropriate amount of time, instead of blaming the sloppyness on your laziness.

i would also blame the fact that i am terrible with procrastination and intensely detail-oriented if given the chance, the first of which i actually really regret. i did this painting near the end of ap testing just before the portfolio was due. during the year i spent tons of my time on other pieces getting every detail right, like the pocahontas and phoenix piece, or working on larger projects extensively for college applications. i was crunching hard by the time the ap portfolio deadline was rolling around, and some ideas like this one ended up incredibly rushed. either way i am sorry because an idea like this deserved an appropriate amount of time to be painted and perfected.

Is this your actual painting? I saw this on tumblr a long time ago and have been planning on getting it tattooed. A version of it, anyway. Same concept. I absolutely love it. Anyway I don't go on here anymore so if you'd like to follow me on instagram it's shauna46 or sxe91.tumblr.com. :)

it most definitely is. people have posted it everywhere without my name or credit and with a false caption too usually. i'm not sure how you'd go about getting it tattooed, but let me know how it turns out if you decide on that. :)

unfortunately i'm not sure i'm putting this up for sale because i've grown really attached to it, and it's gotten posted without credit all over the net so i need to maintain it in order to still claim ownership of it. also i've gotten multiple bids for it, but if i ever change my mind i will let you know.

Hey umm. I'm not much of an experienced commissioned artist, I just started actually. So I literally have no idea how the whole Copyrights stuff works. But I recently did some Lion King drawing for a friend and got lashed out at because they resembled the pictures I was using as references, although I changed it as much as I could, I was told I had to have asked for permission to reference from it. And all this was told to me in the most asshole manner ever, as if I did it intentionally like if I was some kind of criminal. But I guess it helped I guess, cause now, I'm all self conscious about using reference pictures, so I don't anymore, which has made me a better artist. Butttt anywayyyyyyy, a friend asked me to draw her Ariel sowing her legs together and sent me this painting, amazing work btw, and said, "Like this one". But I'm going to have the face showing, tears coming down her face, different background and scenery, and in a completely different position, but of course, still sowing her legs. But sense I don't know how this stuff works, I'm not sure if I have to get your approval or not, but I don't wanna get lashed out at for "plagiarizing". So I don't know, help me out? lol

Thank you so much for asking! It was definitely the right thing to do in this case, and I appreciate you doing that because so many people didn't and didn't even bother altering it before taking full credit for the painting.
Will you be making a profit from this? If so I will be collecting royalty, but in general, my policy is just that the ideas and composition remain entirely my property. If you post it or show it anywhere, it needs to include my name and a link to either my Deviantart or to my website lijiawang.weebly.com
Anyway, thanks so much for asking again, and good luck! You could probably do a better job than I did, considering I rushed this in one night. :P

I think you might face some issues claiming royalties on Disney's existing version of the character

thanks for telling me! i dont know though, i've always been confused about that myself because i see so many unlicensed artists selling disney art with their own concepts and compositions on t-shirts and mugs and such on avenues like redbubble and society6. would you happen to know anything about this?

No problem! &&But even if it ends up looking nothing like your painting for example, like I mention, the face will be visible and crying, and an entirely different position, sideways to be exact, and the part of her limps already sown will be mermaid tail as she's sowing upward, and a lighthouse in the background? And I don't mean that as in me changing it up to avoid giving you recognition, I'd gladly do so(So if you'd be so kind as to give me an example of how to credit you and stuff so I could just copy and paste(lol)). Its just that I really need to know how this stuff works you know! :P

You are free to change it as you like as long as I get credit. And if you are making a profit from it, I do need some royalty for the idea and the composition. But anyway, just say as a caption "This image was inspired by a work by Lijia Wang. To see her work, here is her website: lijiawang.weebly.com" or "Composition and concept by Lijia Wang; see more of her work at lijiawang.weebly.com" Just something like that. :) Thanks again so much for your consideration!

This is GORGEOUS!!!! I just stumbled upon this on Google Images LOL but I fell in love with it despite the dark theme. I literally think this may be the most touching piece of art I've ever seen--the message really communicated with me right away, which is tough to do in lots of paintings.  I am a high school student who is very interested in art.  For my honors art class, we are supposed to combine a couple preexisting photos/other artworks and make a painting of the result.  Would you mind if I based mine off of this theme?  I of course understand if there are copyright problems or you'd just rather keep this idea to yourself, but I absolutely love this idea and I would be so grateful if I could use it!
